Semaglutide FAQs

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an anti-diabetic medication used for treating Type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management. It acts like human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), increasing insulin secretions and enhancing sugar metabolism.

How does Semaglutide work?

The exact mechanism of Semaglutide is not fully known. It may work by delaying gastric emptying or activating centers in the brain involved in appetite regulation, satiety, and nausea.

What are the common side effects of Semaglutide?

Common side effects include nausea and vomiting, especially when starting or increasing the dose. These can often be managed with small, frequent meals, reducing fluid intake with meals, and using anti-nausea medications or natural remedies like ginger candies, peppermint essential oil, and vitamin B6. Staying hydrated, remaining upright after meals, avoiding strong smells and spicy foods, and limiting alcohol intake can also help.

How should constipation be managed while taking Semaglutide?

It’s important to monitor changes in bowel habits and discuss them with your provider to keep bowels moving. Staying hydrated is crucial. Some medications may absorb slower due to delayed gastric emptying, so all medications should be discussed with your provider when starting Semaglutide. Inform other healthcare providers about your use of Semaglutide.

What are the rare but severe side effects of Semaglutide?

Rare but severe side effects can include increased resting heart rate, worsening gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, worsening depression, kidney injury (especially with dehydration), and thyroid tumors (particularly in those with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma). Inform your provider of any history or symptoms related to these conditions.

What should I consider before starting Semaglutide?

Be mindful of how much food or liquid is in your stomach, as too much can cause discomfort and nausea/vomiting, especially with the first dose or when increasing the dose.

What should I do if I experience severe side effects?

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe side effects such as increased heart rate, gallbladder issues, pancreatitis, worsening depression, kidney injury, or symptoms related to thyroid tumors.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Semaglutide?

It is advised to limit alcohol intake while taking Semaglutide to help manage side effects such as nausea and maintain hydration.

Should I inform my other healthcare providers about taking Semaglutide?

Yes, it is important to inform all your healthcare providers about your use of Semaglutide and discuss any new medications with them.

Can Semaglutide interact with other medications?

Yes, Semaglutide can cause some medications to absorb slower due to delayed gastric emptying. Always discuss all your medications with your provider when starting Semaglutide.
